Motorola R2
Motorola R2 is a high-quality and cost-effective analogue/digital two-way radio. Together with its predecessor, the CP040, the R2 is by a long stretch, one of the most popular two-way radios ever made. Advanced features alongside its competitive price point make the radio a first choice.
Due to R2 being analogue and digital compatible it is great for migration to a digital two-way radio. If your organisation has an existing analogue two-way radio system, Motorola R2 can be programmed to work with both your old and new radios. R2 can be programmed to have both analogue and digital channels. Once your organisation has completely replaced all of the analogue radios, the R2 radios can be reprogrammed to have all digital channels.
Standing at 12.7cm in height, 6.1cm in width, 4.2cm in depth (with a standard size battery) and a weight of just 240g, the Motorola R2 is a full-size commercial two-way radio that's lightweight and fits comfortably in the user's hand.
R2 can also be attached to a belt using either a belt clip or a carry case (see our dedicated Motorola R2 accessories category). these two carrying solutions allow for the radio to be carried without obstruction yet still be within reach should they be needed urgently.
The R2 has programmable buttons to allow for frequently used features to be accessible instantly. A common use for one of these buttons is an emergency function that will alert all other radios within the range that a user may have a security or safety breach. Another function could be to switch the scan on or off and finally the button can be programmed for high and low power. It's important to discuss anything you would like pre-programmed into the radios with us when placing your order.
Channel scanning is a very important feature of the R2 or any radio with more than one channel that needs to be monitored. On the R2 a channel of the radio is capable of being set as a scanning channel. This will run through the programmed channels looking for a transmission to ensure that no messages are missed.
Busy channel lockout is also a highly endorsed feature that will block anybody trying to transmit on a channel whilst someone is already talking. This ensures that transmissions aren't crossed which would slow down the overall efficiency of the workforce. Although the lockout feature stops people from interjecting in transmissions, should the PTT button be accidentally pressed then there is also a time-out-timer which will end transmissions after a pre-set period of time (usually 30 seconds) in order to ensure channels aren't locked due to faults with radios.
This radio is supplied as standard with an antenna, spring belt clip, choice of battery and charger is optional when placing your order.

Builds on Motorola CP040 & DP1400
The Motorola R2 is the latest innovation that replaces the CP040 and DP1400. R2 has the same charging profile (not the same batteries) so you can use your existing chargers with the Motorola CP040 and Motorola DP1400. The R2 also shares the exact same accessory connector for earpieces & remote speaker microphones, meaning you could keep all of your existing chargers and audio accessories and swap out just the CP040 or DP1400 for the R2.
Note: Some people prefer to stay with the CP040. We have A-grade refurbished Motorola CP040 radios which appear new and come with a swap-out warranty.

Motorola R2 - Analogue Vs. Digital
The Motorola R2 is available in – Analogue or Digital.
TLDR: The digital version of the Motorola R2 is, put simply, the same radio as an analogue R2 with with the digital microchip activation licence key pre-installed, and hence the digital microchip switched on.
So what's the difference?
The Motorola R2 analogue-only version is the same as the digital version - it even has the digital microchip on the main board - but the digital microchip was never activated in the factory. To activate the digital microchip, you need to purchase a digital microchip activation licence key from Radiotronics here on this website. Read more about the difference between analogue and digital R2.
Most popular Q/A: Can the digital version still work in analogue mode? Yes. The digital version of the R2 can be programmed to work in either analogue or digital. It's definable per channel. The Motorola R2 cannot do mixed-mode on one channel.
Motorola R3 Audio Accessories
E.g. Earpieces, Headsets, Microphones...
The Motorola R2 is able to be used with an earpiece, headset or remote speaker microphone. The Motorola R2 has the M1 2-pin accessory connector meaning that all audio accessories are very cost-effective.
Radiotronics offers both genuine Motorola and aftermarket audio accessories giving a wide range of choice. Please see our dedicated Motorola R2 accessories category.
Motorola DP1400 and CP040 Charger Information
Single charger is optional when purchasing the Motorola DP1400 or Motorola CP040. This is because you might not want a single charger if you intend on buying a multi-way charger, for example.
Single chargers are ideal for when the user needs all the radios almost permanently in different places; for example school classrooms. The user would place the charger in a store room for example and charge the radio every evening for use the next day.
However, single chargers can also promote bad charging practice where the DP1400 can end up permanently left in it's single charger. That's not good for battery health and will damage the battery.
The very best solution for users with more than 4 radios is to use the six way charger. Six way chargers promotes good two-way radio charging practice where radios can be stored in a specific location and booked out and back in to keep track of them. The Motorola six way charger is an integrated all-in-one six way charging solution which is sold separately.

Motorola R2 Features Explained
Taken from our knowledge base, we explain each feature of the Motorola R2.
Channel Scanning
Channel scanning enables the user to monitor a number of channels and respond when a transmission comes through. The scan feature can usually be programmed to include or exclude channels from the scan. Scanning fewer channels makes the scan faster. Should a transmission be found, your radio will stop and pause giving the operator the chance to respond to the transmission before continuing its cycle through the selected channels.
When programming your radio, it is possible to include or exclude channels from the scan, this allows for channels of highest priority to be added meaning that staff members never miss an important transmission. Channel scanning is an ideal choice in environments where updates are frequently given, this allowing for all of your members of staff to remain alert to changing conditions.
Digital hybrid radios can usually scan either or both digital and analogue channels simultaneously. This allows for an extremely flexible scan facility where the user can monitor many channels across both analogue and digital modes.
Read more about Channel Scanning in our Knowledge Base.
Digital Basic Privacy
Digital Basic Privacy ensures that any communications made using your two way radios are protected against the potential for eavesdropping. Although this level of protection is very basic it still offers a degree of protection against your communications being listened in on by unwelcome parties.
Basic Privacy uses a fixed key which is set when the radio is programmed. There are 255 potential keys to be chosen from, this meaning that this is still a fairly simple privacy option for your devices. In order for an eavesdropper to listen in to your conversations they would require your exact frequencies, whilst also knowing the exact key that you have used for privacy.
The main reason for purchasing licensed two way radios is the privacy that they offer over license exempt devices. When communicating in work environments where there is the potential for sensitive information to be passed over the airwaves, having at least a basic level of privacy ensures that due diligence has been taken to keep work communications in house.
Read more about Privacy & Encryption in our Knowledge Base.
Lone Worker
Lone Worker is a feature found on many two way radios where it's able to send a pre-determined signal, for example a distress call or alarm, to other radios in range, Lone Worker requires some type of interaction from the radio user after a period of radio inactivity.
An example of this is the radio can be set to require the radio operator to interact with his or her radio once every 30 minutes. If they fail to do so, their radio will start making an audible sound. If there is still no interaction with his or her radio within 1 further minute, a alarm will sound to other team members to tell them a team member is not responding to Lone Worker.
The supervisor can then dispatch another team member to the non-response team member's last known location to offer assistance.
Read more about Lone Worker in our Knowledge Base.
Voice Activation (VOX)
VOX (voice-operated exchange), more commonly known as Voice Activation, allows the two way radio's microphone and PTT button to be activated by simply speaking into the radio.
How To Use VOX
Most two way radios' voice activation feature only works via an external VOX capable earpiece or headset. Once connected, you simply start speaking and the two way radio will automatically initiate the transmission. When there is no longer any audio coming via your earpiece or headset, the two way radio automatically disengages the PTT.
Activating VOX
Most business grade licence exempt two way radios allow activating the voice activation feature via a button combination on the radio; or by simply plugging in a vox capable earpiece or headset. However, some more complex two way radios, such as our licensed two way radios will require some reprogramming.
VOX Drawbacks
Since VOX works by listening out for audio via the attached accessory, background noise that's near to the sound of a human voice will also activate it. That means practically anything can activate the voice activation.
